I have known this area of Spain for a long time. In 1978 my “just retired” parents abandoned me at University and fled to Spain. During that holiday they bought a villa overlooking the Mediterranean on the Costa Blanca and stayed there for over 22 years.
Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s I have visited the Costa Blanca, usually at least twice a year, and never tire of the area, the climate, the people & the life style.
About 5 years ago one of my closest friends, Deborah Markham, decided to relocate to Oliva, on this northern section of the Costa Blanca, more correctly known as the Costa Azahar (Orange Blossom Coast).
So, although my parents returned to the UK in their 80’s due to failing health, my reasons to continue visiting the Costa Blanca had themselves been continued.
With Deborah’s knowledge & experience to guide me, it was almost inevitable that I would succumb to the temptation to purchase a property in Spain. In October 2003, with much assistance from Deborah, I purchased my first Oliva property, the San Fernando apartment, and began to make it available to rent.

My journey to re-locate from the UK to Oliva, was a long time in the planning & as with many major decisions, looking back, I wish I had done it sooner.
The opportunity came several years ago, but it took me a while to make that final decision to give up my UK career in the financial sector and re-locate to Oliva.
Like my uncle before me I have thrown myself fully into the Oliva life-style, and worked hard to ensure my Spanish is adequate to allow me to live independently in a Spain, with the majority of my social life being entirely “Spanish”.
This area has so much to offer the UK holiday maker, or permanent resident. There are a growing number of “ex-pats” living here & if it’s the “English Bar” you want, then its here, but the area is still very much “Spanish”.
Since moving here I spent some time as a local tour guide, so I can easily point out the best (and worse) places to visit, and I will be delighted to give you as much, or as little help on how to make the most of your stay on the Costa Azahar. |
